A long time coming.
If you’ve been looking for a reason to upgrade your AirPods, Apple hasn’t really given you any for a while.
Thankfully, Apple could finally be gearing up to introduce new models to its earbud lineup.
Wait
Are you telling me the basic airpods don’t even have noise cancelling?
Wtaf, how has that product had any success given the myriad better options
Different earphones for different people and different ears. Some people don’t want or like the feel of a noise canceling ear bud. They require a seal in your ear canal.
IMHO, the primary selling point for Apple / Beats headphones are the little ecosystem integration things that go beyond vanilla BT headphones. And unfortunately, Apple has not opened that stuff up to 3rd parties. So if you want the additional hands free functionality, automatic device handoff, automatic pairing, etc, you need H1 or H2 chip headphones from Apple / Beats.
I physically can’t wear in-ear headphones or headphones that require a seal. Noise cancellation only really works if you have a solid seal either in-ear or over ear. I also hate the isolated feel of noise cancellation, I leave it turned off when I wear any over ear headsets (AirPods max, Sony XM4). I absolutely adore my AirPods 3 and I will upgrade to the 4s assuming they remain accessible to me.
Because most people don’t care about it. My family wants the AirPods and buys the cheapest one as the basic AirPods is usually on sale.
Yes, and that was actually what I wanted from them. They’re open enough where I can hear through them at work without having to turn on a transparency mode. They’re just my work dirty buds so I don’t really care how they sound, just that they work (and they actually work better on Android than native iOS in my experience) and they take calls. Plus they’re not built like cheap crap.
I have a set of gen 2s and one is dead so I borrowed a set of gen 1s collecting dust from a relative. No noise cancel, can’t change volume…I don’t know how they sold at all
I know right? I went to my buddy and he had the airpods they sold with his ipod. I don’t even think they called them that back then.
They didn’t even have bluetooth. You had to plug them in?? Like I asked him why he bought them if they’re this shit and he just looked at me weird.
Gen 1 sold well because there were not a lot of small, fully wireless, earbuds when those launched. Moreover, unlike other BT headphones at the time, they were low latency and paired reliably.
All in all, the market was different back then and the OG AirPods addressed a combination of user experience issues that the rest of the market wasn’t really addressing.

We all know the answer to that
The reason is likely that they were the first successful TWS headphones.
“Successful” after Apple took away the 3.5mm jack for no reason and said “fuck you you have to buy them now,” maybe. Runners were using TWS earbuds for a decade+ before Apple soft-locked users into needing to buy their proprietary product.
What TWS earbuds existed a decade before airpods?
Bluetooth, and Bluetooth headphones have been around for a long time.
Still can’t bike over a speedbump without these fuckers popping out of my ears. I’d rather use my big-ass Sennheiser headphones to escape that anxiety.
The ones without noise cancelling are probably not great for your hearing, I can’t believe I used to use those thingz
What’s so special about the noise canceling AirPod Pros? I have the cheap base ones so just curious for when I need to replace / upgrade.
Its everything. You just have to try it, the sound is phenomenol and you drown out a ton of ambient noise so you can keep the volume much lower and hear much more.
If I disliked someone and wanted them to go deaf, I would recommend non-Pro AirPods haha. You’re in for a treat :)
I hope you are not using airpods in place of hearing protection.
No, certainly not. Mainly talking about on public transport or shopping areas, you’d be amazed doing a comparison twst with them on and off, realizing how loud public areas can be without knowing if not for the comparison
I like the ANC in my XM4s a lot.
Can confirm. If you wish to listen to something while in the train/subway or in some other noisy environments, such as a bus stop right next to a busy road, ANC really helps a lot. Obviously, it’s no replacement for proper hearing protection, but instead of cranking up the volume through the roof, you can listen to things at a very reasonable volume despite the noisy environment.
I don’t know if it’s valid to do, but some people swear by using them at concerts.
Seems great. I can’t stand ear buds that go in my ear though.
They better make new Max pods.
Max pods air.
Are they going to change them back to the original size, or will they still be Shrek sized?
Have you tried some of the Beats form factors? My SO has smaller ears, and those work much better for her.
No, I returned the regular ones and got AirPod pros, using the regular size tips that come with them and they’re fine for the most part.
Yes, even the smallest tips they have hurt my ears. Mine are basically unusable for more than 5 minutes because of this.
