Notes from a 1991 meeting prove that the US, UK, France, and Germany assured the Soviet Union that NATO would not expand east. It's part of a growing body of evidence that the West broke its promise to Russia.
The sad thing is how many antisocialists are going to shrug this off as unimportant and insignificant, possibly with an excuse like ‘who cares? its an indisputable fact Russia broke 42,069 more promises so I think we can break ours every now and then!!!’
This is slightly off‐topic, but I need to mention somewhere that three weeks ago I learned that the Estado Novo, a country that wouldn’t have qualified as democratic even by neoliberalism’s own standards, cofounded the NATO. Needless to say, nobody was in a hurry to get Greece out of the NATO either when it was a military dictatorship from 1967 to 1974, or get Turkey out when it mutated into a military dictatorship at least twice. So much for safeguarding democracy.
