They could really do with better explanation of the federated servers before people sign up. I did do a little research before I knew which instance to use

Well, that’s why open source is so powerful - everything can (and, in fact, should) be done by community for community

I still hope it will become easier one day to Docker-host a Lemmy instance where other Docker setup and containers are already present and cannot be changed just for Lemmy.

I spun up a separate instance because I didn’t even want to bother trying to roll my own unsupported reverse proxy config. And things are still glitchy enough as is. It’s a fun learning experience, though. Sometimes the less polished things are, the more opportunity there is to learn

You know what? I think it’s good if it’s not that accessible. The internet has turned to shit because every fucking idiot with a phone has such easy access to it. It’s good if people have to think for a minute before being able to participate. It’s not difficult, but it might cull the toxic bullshit people a bit.

The amount of people has increased, even within the last few days, a bigger community is always better, but I’d like us to keep the same optimistic and appreciative attitudes we all seem to have at the moment, that would really make it so much better than Reddit

Was browsing Sync For Reddit a few minutes ago when it finally shut down. Just got the following notification:

Sync For Reddit has shutdown. Thank you for using Sync. It’s been one hell of a ride.

Man am I pissed. It’s been harder and harder to browse Reddit with a clear conscience lately, and now the changes are finally real. Happy to be here now.

I really don’t understand how people can still use reddit with a clean conscience especially after their treatment to Christian and other 3rd party developers. They’ve made it clear with their words and actions that they don’t give a fuck about their users, so how can a respectful person still choose to stay? It was a lost cause since the beginning, the protests were never going to work. I appreciate the ones who’ve decided to abandon the ship and join us here.

      People are desensitized.

Most services or products have some toe dipped in shady shit, so people have been forced to learn to reconcile with participating more or less in a least some unethical bullshit, just to have a normal life.

Want to have a t-shirt? Probably just supported slave labour.

Want to talk to a friend? Probably just sold you digital soul to a megacorp, and at least two foreign powers.

I get what you’re saying and I also completely understand why people have become desensitised but there’s nothing more dangerous than an apathetic society.

We can’t end world hunger, but we can atleast feed a poor person. We can’t end child labour, but we can atleast sponsor a child’s education and basic necessities.

Just because we can’t end it all doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try and contribute to make our society a better place in whatever way we can.

I agree, and its one of the reasons I push the people around me to think about how the world works more.

I can’t fix everything, but I’m doing what I can, and I try to get the passive people I can get to, to snap out of it.

You said you couldn’t understand these people, but it’s possible. And doing so, is step one of getting through to them.

I don’t think that just because some people don’t abandon Reddit now means they’re apathetic or desensitized in general. There’s so many things wrong with the world and not everyone can and will fight everything all the time. People have different item on the top of their lists.

I’m certain you are doing things in your life others would be flabbergasted at like you are here. For example: Do you eat meat, tuna, stuff with palm oil? Do you have pets? Do you drive a car? There’s people out there who’d call you apathetic to the problems these things cause.

I’m certainly not a saint 100% of the time because if I tried I’d fall apart. Like everyone else would.

          Edit: removed double negative

I think the biggest takeaway here is time. I have a massive to-do list and priority list, and realistically I don’t have the time to research every single product I buy, what services I subscribe to, nor do I really have time to volunteer because I’m working so much to keep myself and my wife afloat. I do my damnedest to make informed decisions on products I buy, but at the end of the day, there is not such thing as ethically sourced gasoline. I’m down to do something or anything to help change society, but every option at the moment either gets you locked up, made a mockery, or made a martyr.

The hope I have is that one day, with all the wealth this country has amassed through capitalism, the government can redistribute that wealth to improve the quality of life for citizens. Use that wealth to improve health care, affordable education, build a shit load of homes for people, I can go on and on.

It’s not wealth itself, it’s the way it’s used.

You have to keep in mind that most, maybe majority of people, are just consumers. They don’t care about the background stuff going on as long as they can access their favorite source of content. You can say the same thing about Twitter. People won’t care until it directly affects them.

I’ll admit I’m moving from reddit and don’t yet understand what lemmy and the fediverse are all about. I’m currently using the Connect for Lemmy app. So far it feels like there’s a lot less content here, or I have no idea how to find the popular instances/communities. Another small gripe I have is when I search for a community (eg. gamedev) there’s multiple that seem to be about the same thing. I’ve subscribed to them all and I guess that’s just the nature of decentralized communities but it certainly makes the user experience a bit less seamless.

Does anyone have tips on how to best utilize Lemmy?

There is less content, “Rome wasn’t built in a single day”. But it will grow. And about the multiple communities, that’s true, the experience is different from Reddit, but that doesn’t mean it’s worse. This structure is new, so we will see how it grows.

I think we’ve been long overdue to replace essential social functions - like discussion forums - with community-run free software. I’ll put up with a lot of clunky for that payoff: people being able to discuss a topic without corporations getting between them.

Oh yeah, but not as much. And many of the communities that have popped up since, would probably not have had enough activity to be worth starting before now.
