Tomorrow, reddit will be shutting off 3rd party app access. If the twitter migration is anything to go by, that means that the wave of new users coming in the next few weeks will be much bigger than the wave we saw earlier this month.
Our lead techy admin @supakaity@lemmy.blahaj.zone is also recovering from broken bones and surgery, so she will be slower to respond to issues :)
All of that being said, we’re as prepared as we can be. We’re currently running our instance on hardware with excess capacity to spare, but who knows if it will be enough.
So, good luck to all of us, and see you on the other side :)
I’m excited to welcome all the reddit refugees!
Hi!
Hello there!

nice to meet you
Hey there, excited to be here!
Hello! :)
Welcome! Be sure to check out the many apps in active development.
Oh, shit! It’s PoppinKREAM! I’m glad to see you made it over here! I loved your posts and comments. :)
How did you set a profile picture?
Thanks! good to be here
Eep! Wishing you a speedy recovery, @supakaity@lemmy.blahaj.zone! Take care of yourself first, we’ll understand if things here go wonky for a bit. 💜
Commenting to help bump this comment up. We’re grateful for the work you provide your community. Take care of yourself and do your best! We’ll all see each other on the other side.
Thanks!
I’m mostly on the mend now and able to tap keys again. Which is timely given the recent Reddit and Twitter happenings!
RedditIsFun is down, so I am out. Used it for the 10 years I was there, and don’t like the “New Reddit” they’ve been creating for monetization-sake.
10 years here as well. Was sad opening it up and seeing nothing, even though I knew it was coming.
Yeah. It’s bittersweet for sure. I used to thoroughly enjoy reddit 5 or so years ago… and at the risk sounding like a crotchety old man, “it’s not as good as it once was!” Things change, and I’m eager to see if lemmy is as good as it is in theory. Federated site sounds so futuristicly positive!
Was worse because they closed it down at like 5pm on the 30th where Reddit is based. I was hoping it would last till midnight :/
I don’t remember hiring a ghost writer for my autobiography, but you got all the details right!
Freelancing my ghostwriting skills… they’re not honed enough to charge for yet. Haha
Same, I’ve had a reddit account for 8 years, but I lurked since maybe a couple of years since it’s inception. Used RIF for maybe 6 years.
I hate what reddit has become. I’m not someone who regularly participates with any communities, so I cannot really be relied upon to generate content, I’m a perpetual consumer rather than a producer.
I’m just looking for somewhere that gives me access to the latest news about the things I care about. So far Lemmy seems to have a lot if promise!
Do you have any advice on finding the subreddit equivalents? I followed a lot of hyperspecific subs like FortniteLeaks and Indiettrpg design and lfg stuff, and I’ve no idea how to find things like that here
Every instance seems to make a asklemmy or copy of other popular Reddit subs, so everything is spread out. I bet we just have to wait a bit to see where people will post, how much server power instances needs, which ones will survive and so on.
Interesting times indeed.
Yeah! It gives me a good vibe. Seems to hit upon what you’re looking for too, so I hope you end up enjoying it!
So I was going to go check and make sure Joey wasn’t working and well lol it’s up. Also their subreddit mentions red reader being up. What’s that about?
Yup, same. Been on it since 2011 or so. I’m transitioning out of that space. Trying to find the most user-friendly Lemmy experience, atm.
I’m using jerboa, and it’s been… okay, so far. Not a vast array of choices for mobile, but I’m optimistic.
Sync just stopped for me sooooo here I am.
RIF just stopped too. RIP.
Yep. The bridge is burned. Theres no going back now. Fuck Steve Huffman
Aaron Swartz would be so disappointed in him.
RIP sync
RIP Sync, you were the best
Sync is dead, long live Sync (can’t wait for their Lemmy client)
Welcome!
I came here in anticipation of this day. Let me know if you have any question about lemmy or kbin “the threadiverse”.
Was using Sync pro, moved here a few weeks ago and never looked back at reddit since.
I rode the Apollo train right to the end, about ten minutes ago. So long, Shitty CEO, please let the door hit you twenty times on the way out.
BaconReader went down too and I finally decided to make an account here. Interested to see how this goes but I know I won’t be using the official reddit app
Welcome!
Apollo is (well, was) one of my favorite apps. Just because of how well-designed and thought out it was, especially with the iOS design language. Sad to see it go, but at least I’ve got wefwef.
Memmy and Mlem are both native 3PAs based on Apollo. They both have test flight betas, but they’re also both full currently. Memmy has been submitted for app store approval though and should be available soon.
Now Twitter shitting itself in the name of forcing subscriptions is causing a mass migration to Mastedon. The Fediverse is going to get incredibly popular…fast.
I could deal with not having reddit sync, but opening twitter today and seeing that I have a tweet ration made me immediately sign up for lemmy. I imagine a lot of people are similar
On that note, jeroba throws an error every time i open it about how this instance is older than the lowest supported version, but it seems like i can still use most of the sites functinality? Just thought i’d mention that
Yep, that’s a screw up by the Jerboa devs. If we upgraded to 0.18 we would lose captcha, and version 0.18.1 with captcha hasn’t been released yet. So there is no way for us to safely upgrade to the version Jerboa wants just yet.
I switched from Jerboa to Thunder today. It’s so much nicer, but still missing some features. The web app Wefwef is pretty nice too.
I’m using connect for lemmy
wefwef*
Like what? I’m about to launch an app just in time for the shutdown, my goal is to capture this wave and spread them out. If I haven’t covered it already, I’ll see if I can take care of it today
Lucky, Jerboa just crashes on launch for me now.
Same here. I’ve switched to liftoff now.
Mine isn’t crashing on launch, but whew, seems like a few regressions in the latest build. Errors out the wazoo, lots of stuff not loading and hanging. I might dump the F-Droid version for now since I think the Play Store one is slightly older.
I’d recommend connect for lemmy, way more stable. Jerboa is unbelievably buggy.
Thanks! I’ll give it a try. So far I’ve liked Jerboa over Summit and Liftoff.
I use Memmy and i have no issues. They’re going to be in the App Store very soon according to changelog
Here’s a link to beta if you’re on iOS
Hey! I just wanted to let you know for linking something, the [] are supposed for the text and the () are for the weblink address.
instead of being [https://testflight.apple.com/join/6jaRU6rD](link to beta)
it should be link to beta (I put in the address inside [] and the text inside () )
hope that helps!
I was gonna keep lurking Reddit until Sync shut down, now I’m on Lemmy. Took me a little bit to figure the platform out tbh, having third party apps for it now seems to be great.
It’s pretty easy once you figure out where to sign up, and download whichever app you like best. It’s actually pretty flexible imo
What app do you use? Jerboa isn’t compatible with Blahaj Lemmy (older version).
I like liftoff and wefwef.app but try Jerboa again, either the instance or app must have updated because it’s working for me right now.
There it is!
Thanks.
I’m really enjoying ‘Connect for Lemmy’. It’s somewhat similar to RIF
Yes, blahaj is running 0.18.x now as you can see in the footer on the web version

The reddit app I used stopped working yesterday (yes I know why but it’s funnier to pretend I don’t) so here I am! Trying to figure out how lemmy works in the context of the larger fediverse.
Download Wifwif (pwa) and tell your friends. Let’s kill that IPO
Nothing comes up when I Google Wifwif pwa. What is it?
They likely meant wefwef :) It’s a mobile app for lemmy
I googled that and I didn’t find it, what is that?
They mean wefwef, it’s a Progressive Web App which means you visit their website (wefwef.app), press the three dots and select “Add to homescreen”, instead of downloading it through the app store on your phone
Sync has stopped working for me now. Looking forward to the future on Lemmy!
It’s a good time to encourage those who can afford it to donate a couple of bucks to your home instance operator for server costs, etc. :)
How can we do that? I’d like to support Lemmy and its instances in any way that I can, but am still very new to this.
Hi! Check here: https://sh.itjust.works/post/213731
Good luck and godspeed admins, and get well soon @supakitty@lemmy.blahaj.zone
Exciting times! And get well soon Kaity!
Well, rif is gone, so now reddit is too. I hope this place and others on lemmy grow to have vibrant and flourishing communities
I hope so too. There is less content but we all have to aim to grow it.
Was waiting for Narwhal to break and it never happened. Turns out the dev got a deal to not pay anything until he can release a ‘Narwhal 2’ that’s subscription only. Wasn’t an Apollo user but the dev got shafted and reddit didn’t offer anything close to what the Narwhal dev did. Still deleted my account as planned and deleted their app off my phone.
Yeah I saw that too, spez is a piece of shit, did you also see all the lies he made up about the Apollo dev? It was so childish lol
Yeah. I was following all his posts even though I preferred a different app. fuck spez and fuck the dev of narwhal for being a boot-licker.
Fuck spez, certainly, but I can easily understand why Narwhal’s developer took the deal. I’m sure they invested a huge amount of time and effort into their app and it’s hard to walk away from that when there’s a viable path forward. Apollo’s dev would have probably taken the same deal, had it been on the table. The problem was never that Reddit needed to start charging for API access, it’s that they priced it unreasonably high after assuring devs they wouldn’t and also gave very little notice before those prices took effect.
Same with Relay, seems to be working just fine so guess he struck some kind of deal too
