Hi Folks,

I’m looking for a book with a decent overview of Native American history with a focus on the period leading up to the influx of western settlers. My primary interest is in the Pacific Northwest.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hmm it’s not as much about Pacific Northwest, but the book 1491 is extensive. It covers the history and life of central/South American powers like the Aztec and Inca, as well as the more nomadic lives of the North American people.

It’s more making the argument that the native Americans were extremely advanced for the time, especially compared to the Europeans. However, their advancement was within a different geography, meaning that their problems, and therefore solutions, were different. It’s a very interesting book that I would highly recommend!

The Dawn of Everything has quite a bit on the Pacific Northwest, especially in comparison with Californians.
