    “Jip” or “gyp” is a shortened form of the word gypsy, a pejorative that many Romani find offensive. Scam or con might be better alternatives.

      The title has been updated to “ripoff” per another user’s comment- your instance‘s federated copy may be out of date, or you just happened to fetch the post before the change.

      Ironically, “gypsy” was a slur for Egyptian. Because the people who originated the slur widely believed a false narrative that the Romani people were originally from Egypt.

      I’m sure you were aware, but for completeness for anyone who happens upon this. Personally, I find it really interesting that this racial slur doesn’t even refer to their race! I guess it’s kinda like calling native americans “indian”, though many north american tribes have adopted the term at this point.
