    Probably another Israel protest…

Maybe because Israel’s contestant is someone they literally held a TV contest to find, and then told her what song she’s allowed to sing.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/08/arts/music/eurovision-israel-eden-golan-hurricane.html

It’s pure propaganda and rubbing everyone else’s nose in Israel being allowed to participate while actively committing a genocide.

The song was written explicitly to attract sympathy, and it was so bad originally Eurovision had to make them change some of they lyrics.

I miss the days Little Big did a Spanish language song to piss of Russian nationalists, now they’re living in exile in LA and this shit is going on.

I don’t follow Eurovision that closely, did I just never notice this before? Or has it always been like Olympics and FIFA?

Always has been. The whole introduction of the public vote really highlights (what has always been) the political voting of the judges. All the scandi countries voting for each other, border buddy voting, no-one voting for the UK etc.

It was only a few years ago that Iceland got in trouble for briefly showing a Palestine flag in the finals because the rules state “no politics”, but half the songs are making political statements.

Is there a political reason why people don’t vote for the UK or are we just that shit?

Up until a years ago I was of the opinion “There’s no political voting, UK 2022 and Germany 2018 were super popular so it’s possible”. But honestly, after last year I think it’s possible, but some countries still have a disadvantage and they need to produce an absolutely amazing song to get a great result, but only a good song won’t get them the points a different country would get. Only my personal opinion though.

I can think of a few possible factors. First is that we’re not part of any notable voting blocs, so there’s nobody automatically putting us first. That brings down the average relative to those who are in one. We also get automatic entry to the finals every year without having to get ranked well in the semi finals, so there’s a higher chance of a British entry in the finals being unpopular than there is of most other countries. But also, I think, we might just be overestimating what we deserve. We don’t actually do that badly; only Ireland and Sweden have won it more than us, and our average score in the finals if you actually add them all up is pretty much middle of the pack

Latest rumor: joost was being harassed constantly by the Israeli zionists. They used his dead parents as ammunition in their verbal abuse. Joost lost temper and did something towards Israeli photographer.

The article also talks about the release of the italian voting results. Apparently they weren’t the actual results, but then what were those results? The results they had hoped for or what?

Wie RAI am Freitag in einer Pressemitteilung betonte, hätte es sich um einen technischen Fehler und zudem nicht um die tatsächlichen Ergebnisse gehandelt.

Soggy hell. Even going with the concept of ESC trying to be apolitical, Israel’s presence is just fucking things up for everyone. In addition to this new mess, every country’s artist has been getting constant harassment for A) joining, B) not protesting Israel, C) protesting Israel but not enough D) protesting Israel or E) All of the above from various people.

And now there are talks of voting “tactical” by making anyone but Israel win, i.e. voting for current betting favorite Croatia. Meaning, peoole won’t get to just vote for who they like and accept that some other worthy contestant won instead, like usual.

I wish they had the fucking tact to sit this one out even if the rules allow it.

I think a stronger message would be to make Israel win this year so the EBU are forced to host the contest in a country currently repressing and illegally occupying it’s neighbour.

The EBU will surely then have to pull it’s finger out and explain it’s double standards.

I like to believe the ESC has long since understood leaving Israel in was the wrong call, but this year’s event is too far along to change. A promise is a promise and all that.

There’s a lot of censoring going on in Eurovision this year to try and make things look pretty…

Was it a few years back when they ignored several country votes and just replaced their votes with what they thought they should have votted?

    https://eurovision.tv/mediacentre/release/ebu-statement-irregular-voting-2022

the ESC Executive Supervisor has the right to remove the votes concerned for allocating the ranks and to replace them with a substitute aggregated result calculated automatically to determine the final country result of these countries

when they ignored several country votes and just replaced their votes with what they thought they should have voted?

Several countries‘ juries made a deal with each other to exchange all the high points so that they all get a good placement. But this has been discovered so the jury points have been annulled.
I agree that the way they handle this wasn’t great, but it’s good that they are making sure the jury votes are real and not the result of corruption or weird deals (as some people sometimes claim).

Its great that they caught it, but the just covered it up during the live broadcast and it only got attention the following day. If I remember correctly, they had “connection issues” when the representatives from those countries were to cast their points

Yep. That’s what I meant with “the way they handled it wasn’t great”. I kind of can understand their motivation that it’s the easiest not to tell the countries they found out about it and just not letting them talk at all… but it’s unprofessional and not honest / open :/

So a journalist asked the israeli contestant if she was “causing” a security risk, she answered i dont have to answer that if i dont want to. And Joost yelled “why not?” (Guessing why not just answer) and now he is being investigated? Cool. Soo israel the next winner?

Not quite. The host told her she did not have to answer, but she did give a full answer.

Joost was hiding himself in a flag and generally behaving childish and rude during the conference, but that wasn’t a big problem. Everyone was exhausted.

Today’s event is something that happened today, and we have no details yet.

From what I heard Joost was getting a bunch of political questions right before that without the host ever saying “you don’t have to answer that”, and that’s where his reaction came from
