Hi, I recently moved to Lemmy and decided to take feddit.de as my primary instance. I would like however to actually see other communities on other instances too. So I set out to check other communities. Take https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/c/freemediaheckyeah as an example. When I open that link directly I can see many posts:

When I visit that exact same community thru my instance there are only 4 posts and the stats in the lower right corner look way different:

What am I doing wrong? I have set my languages to be german and english. Also I have activated NSFW in case that was connected to this issue.

Unfortunately, it looks like your community is hosted on lemmy.ml, which is currently overloaded. A couple of the side effects of that is the subscription pending yellow button instead of the subscribed message you would normally get. Unfortunately the delivery of posts is also affected by the overload.

You need to click the subscribe pending button a couple of times until you actually get subscribed to the community.

Edit: the screenshots finally loaded and you’re not dealing with a lemmy.ml issue, but the rest of the comment still applies.

I guess with the influx of Reddit refugees hammering the servers, syncing between ALL instances is super shaky right now. Like, view this thread from lemmy.sdf.org and none of the comments are visible. (edit: and now the thread has totally disappeared from that instance, even though it was definitely here a couple hours ago. lol.)

    Another example:

    lemmy.world/c/metal@lemmy.world

feddit.de/c/metal@lemmy.world (Hasn’t been updated in three days!)

lemmy.fmhy.ml/c/metal@lemmy.world (404 error, even though the two instances are supposed to be federated)

Is it that someone needs to approve my sub first? But then again… how can it be that you can see more when logged out than when you are trying to subscribe to a community

I’m new here too so not entirely figured everything out, but I think they might be defederated? I don‘t know the communities involved, but if two instances defederate each other, I think they don‘t exchange any more data between servers, leading to situations like this where you only see a few old posts and nothing new. So, if you create a user in the other instance, you wouldn‘t see any new content from the one you‘re originally from either. I seen something similar happening with beehaw for example which is an instance that defederates a lot including a server with one of my accounts.

It‘s a weird quirk of this whole system, but it helps if you think of the first part of a website as it‘s own bubble which may or may not connect itself to other bubbles, they have streams of information between them that the admins can cut off if they want. You can circumvent these issues it has on you somewhat by having different accounts for any bubbles you may have gotten locked out of.

As it all grows, I expect some little islands of opinion to form with one big blob with most non-controversial stuff on it.
