Hi! It is my first post in this community in Lemmy. I just wanted to show my ortholinear KB. It is a KpRepublic BM40 (plank-like) with Cherry Brown switches.

I built it 8 months ago and I love it, for every day work and for working elsewhere beacause it is very easy to carry in my backpack.

I hope you like it.

Most 40%s bind the numbers to an additional layer (think of layers like an additional shift key), for example, on my planck, I have the “lower” layer and my top row bound to numbers.

You can also do fun things like mapping “lowered” keys to number pad layout. This is also what I do on my lower layer. When I hold down my lower button, I have number on the top row and a 10-key layout where my right hand rests on the home row.

      The numbers are in my Lower Layer (pressing with thumb the blue button): Esc 1 2 3 _ _ Vol+ Prev ↑ Next Play Bspc Del 4 5 6 . , Vol- ← ↓ → Ñ Insert
      Shf 7 8 9 0 € Mute _ _ _ _ Enter

      The symbols are in my Raise Layer (pressing with thumb the orange button): Esc ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) Bspc F1 F2 F3 F4 F5 F6 ` - = [ ]
      F7 F8 F9 F10 F11 F12 ~ _ + { } |

Don’t remerber exactly, because despite I build it some months ago, the pieces I bougot them almost a year ago. Anyways here it is an estimation:

      • 1 PCB KpRepublic BM40: 45€
      • 50 Gateron Brown Switches: 15€
      • 48 keycaps XDA: 25€
      • 1 Aluminium case for BM40: 25€
      • 1 Carbon fiber plate for BM40: 10€

So, around 120€. I mean, it is not cheap, but I am really happy with the result. But I am sure it is not toe most expensive thing you can find into this rabbithole 😂

While I’d never want to talk someone out of building their own custom from individually sourced components… let it be said that you can also get a pre-built Planck from ZSA: https://www.zsa.io/planck

It’s a bit pricier than combining everything on your own for sure. But if it’s in your budget and you don’t know your way about what components you need it’s an option.
