She’s not a landlord. The land she got was because of the vietnamese land reform. Every rural family has a small plot of land to plant stuff on, essentially a ensurance against famine. She had neither the time, nor the need to do so, so she let her extended family use it.

Isn’t it something like 500m2 as well? Which sounds like a lot, because people are hilariously bad at visualizing numbers, but is actually just a ~22x22m square or about the size of a basketball court. That’s not even enough for anything close to actual subsistence farming (Google says a family would need 1-3 hectares or 10000-30000m2), but at best some very small scale assistence for rural families.

Jup, it really wasn’t much. In the worst case you could growq some food there which would lessen the impact of food shortages, but that’s about it.
