A police spokesman said previous statements that Nex Benedict didn’t die as a result of “trauma” didn’t rule out the fight as a contributing factor.
So the cops in previous statements were being purposefully misleading to help push the narrative that Nex died by suicide. That was obvious, but will this be enough to combat the bad faith misinformation being spread all over the fucking place?
No. The misinformation has already done it’s damage and can’t truly be reversed. People who only looked at this in passing got their headline and are likely to pack this memory away as they first saw it. The others, well, even if there was no misinfo, they would have pretty much gone with a victim blaming narrative anyway, because they just hate them.
The only hope now is that the correct story is what ends up being used by the authorities and anything to do with the case in regards to the legal industry.
Unless the federal government gets involved (which hopefully, maybe?) Ryan Walters has already been under federal investigation for all the (very likely) embezzling for seemingly ages and nothing has happened there. Oklahoma is corrupt at its core and if it’s left up to Oklahomans there will be no justice.
Idk, it’s just pretty terrifying as a transgender Oklahoman that if I’m murdered when I’m driving through a small town the cops would effortlessly be able to cover it up and come up with a story so that redditors could pick over my gender identity.
I didn’t consider the possibility of walters being in trouble. I meant the case of the dead teenager and who killed them.
My point with Walters is more that one can flagrantly violate the law in Oklahoma if they are the “right kind” of person. I’m not local to Owasso, but there’s a lot of folks who are pretty sure that cop kids where involved.
I’m not quite sure why they think him dying by suicide because of the fight is any better.
You’re right, it shouldn’t be any better. But to them it just confirms their belief that LGBTQ people are “mentally ill” and they can blame the suicide on their “lifestyle.” Ugh.

Done. (Sorry, I was out and about.)
Nex preferred they/them, iirc?
As was shown to me… from the linked article:
Friends have told NBC News that Benedict was transgender and primarily went by he/him pronouns at school but also used they/them pronouns, which Benedict’s family also used. Several other friends said Benedict preferred he/him pronouns.

They like when we kill ourselves. I don’t remember what the number is, but they’ll meme the percentage.

Let’s maybe not immediately assume the person was correcting you in a transphobic way and instead was correcting you because they actually read the article and knew the correct pronouns? Unless they made another comment I missed, I don’t see any way to interpret that as transphobic besides you assuming for no reason that they thought Nex was a transwoman

I don’t really care what his mother called him, but the quote from the article seems to disagree with you

Look bud. I get that you want a trusty point of reference for their gender, and kudos to you on that. The whole reason they were brutally beaten to death is because of their gender non conformity. Them being trans has been the whole reason the police has been so virulent in their disinformation.
If you believe there is possible doubt about what they said their gender was or you are confused by conflicting sources, maybe just say Nex?
The person who knows better is the person itself, may they rest in peace…
