Maybe I’m (again) overlooking something, but where is the “button row” below messages? I can’t interact at all with messages, just read them and tap the “mark all as read” button.

This is a known bug and is being delt with, the settings option to have the comment action bar hidden/showing by default doesn’t effect the inbox.
To reveal the action bar press and hold the empty space beside the username of the reply/mention/message.
