Police officers detain a woman who laid flowers for Alexei Navalny at the Memorial to Victims of Political Repression in St. Petersburg, Russia on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024.

Russian authorities say that Alexei Navalny, the fiercest foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin who crusaded against official corruption and staged massive anti-Kremlin protests, died in prison. He was 47. (AP Photo)

Go to jail if you speak out against the president, BUT, there is a nice chandelier in a subway station.

Lol, that bit where he praised their grocery store prices was insane. The average American makes over 300% what the average Russian makes in terms of salary.

The Navalny memorial at the Wall of Grief is makeshift.

People are paying tribute to him there because the wall is a monument to Stalin era political persecution and Putin is basically doing the same shit.

I’m not even sure how to define how self-satirical it is that they made a monument to the political victims of repression, which is now where they authorize any kind of demonstration if one is ever allowed, and it’s also the spot where they arrest everyone. It’s straight out of a joke.

I’m sure the man that regularly participated in neo-nazi marches, advocated to strip non-ethnic Russians of their Russian citizenship, and called muslim Chechens cockroaches is worth celebrating.

What the fuck is your problem? Instead of actually addressing what I said you just want to start getting transphobic? How about this: would you object to the arrest of the neo-nazis at Charlottesville? I don’t understand what you think is redeemable about this man, all nazis deserve death. We fought a war over this, probably the biggest one yet.

Edit: Oh nice, you’re just gonna edit your comment after claiming that every person with pronouns in their name has shitty opinions. If you’re gonna be a transphobic dick at least say it with your whole chest.

You think it’s a bad thing that I recognized I said something shitty and edited it away?

Perhaps this will answer your question:

Beginning in the late 2000s, Navalny used racial slurs when describing ethnic Georgians, called for the deportation of Muslim migrant workers and delivered speeches at Russian Marches, annual rallies of far-right nationalists, white supremacists and neo-Nazis.

“It was a long time ago,” Alexander Verkhovsky, head of the Moscow-based Sova hate crimes monitor, told Al Jazeera in 2021, describing Navalny as “a different man now”.

You expect me to believe that the man that went to a well-known neo-nazi march for 4 consecutive years in the 2010’s just got his shit together and decided to stop being a nazi while still backing the nationalist party in Russia? He’s not even the most electable candidate against Putin which makes this whole bandwagon everyone’s on even more ridiculous, the second most popular party in Russia is the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia. But everyone keeps trying to posture this supposedly ex-nazi as the last opponent Putin has ever had. It’s ridiculous and not based in reality.

I don’t know what you expect me to do here, start sucking this random dude’s dick? I don’t care about his opinion. Living in rural America I’ve seen plenty of nazis and Navalny is no different, especially when he’s made his career on advocating for the genocide of muslims in his country. Would you accept the apology of the Grand Wizard of the KKK and just believe he changed his ways because some guy vouched for him?

I get that real actual nazis are horrible and need to be put down, but I feel like you’re exaggerating both the severity of Navalny’s political positions and downplaying Verkhovsky’s position by quite a bit.

In a 2007 pro-gun rights video, Navalny presents himself as a “certified nationalist” who wants to exterminate “flies and cockroaches” – while bearded Muslim men appear in cutaways. He whips out a gun and shoots an actor wearing a keffiyeh who tried to “attack” him.

Yeah maybe overt Russian white nationalists shouldn’t be revered and their supporters shouldn’t be given the right to freedom of expression.

Im not sure how i feel about that, and this might be an unpopular take, but does everyone need an absolutely untarnished past to be able to be recognized for something? Or can we just accept that while not a perfect person, he is a pretty decent figurehead for anti-putinism?

I actually wanted to look this up. This is an interesting article - https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-evolution-of-alexey-navalnys-nationalism

“He has never apologized for his earliest xenophobic videos or his decision to attend the Russian March. At the same time, he has adopted increasingly left-leaning economic positions and has come out in support of the right to same-sex marriage. This strategy of adopting new positions—without ever explicitly denouncing old ones—is probably the reason the suspicion of ethno-nationalism continues to shadow Navalny.”

I personally don’t have really have opinion either way but was curious.
