Unlike many other large subreddits r/books has not made any statements about the API changes. I did try and post something about it but it ended up getting deleted. At 22.1 million users this would be a pretty significant addition to the protest.
Does anyone know why there hasn’t been anything official?

There was a post with 28k upvotes a few days ago that mods chose to ignore. I’d take that to mean they’ll be ignoring the API changes altogether.

Can’t sell out if you are not being paid. I guess they just don’t care, which is fine, if a little disappointing.
Maybe they don’t need to care, if they use desktop/official app.
I dunno if it counts as selling out when they previously haven’t had a stance on it, but it is disappointing.
They’ve not taken the sub private but they have now put up a post supporting the protest and turning off all posting and commented. A bit half hearted maybe but better than nothing.

Yeah, I saw that last night. Frankly I’m surprised/not surprised at how much of reddit is still up.
I’m weaning myself off of reddit, regardless of what the sub mods do. Glad to find a books community here.
I was thinking the same thing yesterday. Seems like a group of readers are best equipped to step away from the internet. Even just for 2 days.
Should be the case shouldn’t it? I guess if they mods won’t go dark individuals can just stop going on Reddit. I haven’t completely cut the cord yet but I did remove the app from my phone and replaced it with Jerboa.
At the end of the day, the only ones who can choose to make the subreddit private are the mods, and I don’t think they’ve given any public statements on it either way. It may simply be that the mods aren’t unified on whether or not to join.
That they possibly aren’t unified is a good point since that would explain the lack of statement either way. Whether they do/don’t support it I think a clear statement is important for an issue of this scale and salience. At the moment it just seems like the whole community is ignoring it or doesn’t care which can’t be the case.
I agree. A few subs I’m in (was in?) asked members if they should go dark and went with the general consensus which was yes. I think that’s a better way to go about it if the mods can’t decide. Willful ignorance seems an odd choice
Yeah I agree. Apparently they have ended up turning off posting and comments but not going fully private which is a bit odd.

They would be up in arms about books getting banned but 3rd party apps not so much it seems.
My general feeling is that the only reason to delete a thread is if it’s spam or somehow offensive to site wide rules against violence, racism, etc.
Deleting a thread because you don’t like it or it’s inconvenient is a mark of cowardace and cowards have no business being mods.
The given reason was that I ‘didn’t give enough detail’. However, there are shorter posts than what I wrote that have been left up and gained attention but are not about the protest.
If something doesn’t have enough detail, you just let the downvotes bury it. There’s no need for mod action. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Agreed so I do think it was about what I was posting.
I think maybe most users there don’t care? Like… maybe most users there use desktop or the official reddit app. Your post being deleted was probably because it wasn’t related to books itself, and the mods there decided that they just wanna keep the community going
