Lemmy makes it pretty simple to upload pictures currently but what about videos? I found this issue posted in 2022 about integrating a video service but nothing really came from it. Does Lemmy have a road map to solve this issue? I feel like this will be an important part in Lemmy’s adoption

I don’t think uploading any videos will be directly supported at any point in the future as it would put a lot of strain on the servers due to taking up a lot of storage space. This would result in higher server costs for the admins.

For now your best option is to just upload your videos to some place else (like PeerTube) and then post a link of it to Lemmy. For example, @sexy_peach@feddit.de has already done this multiple times when uploading Factorio gameplay.

I don’t disagree with videos not being hosted on lemmy itself however I think there needs to be some more complete solutions.

For example one solution could be to build an API integration with the peertube platform and provide a method within the users profile to setup the API integration with their preferred peertube service. We want to avoid as much as possible people having to leave one platform to do a task on another platform to than come back to the original platform to post a link. This will discourage a lot of people from posting a lot their content due to it being not unified.

Does Lemmy have another location aside from their issues to post future feature requests? I couldn’t find a proper place to share some constructive feedback.

You’re definitely right that lemmy-ui should have support for embedding videos from platforms like PeerTube. For feature requests maybe check out !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml? Not sure if it’s actually the right place for that though.

Edit: I’m an idiot. I just realized which community this is lmao

The problem with that is that you either limit the file size extremely low, like discord does, and it becomes pretty much useless, or you up the limit to something somewhat useable, and before you know it you’re in charge of storing and serving 1TB of garbage per day.

Video hosting is very expensive, and with Lemmy instances barely getting enough donations for basic hosting, it’s just not feasible.
