Well, whew again! The influx of new users into Sopuli surprised not only me, but also Hetzner’s VPS. The disk space ran out fast, and Sopuli was down today for many hours because of this. I was busy with work, which didn’t help with the issue.
I bought extra disk space from Hetzner, and the founder of brand new Lemmy instance https://lemmy.world !ruud@lemmy.world helped to use it on the VPS. Really big thanks for him! Apologies to both new and old users, hopefully this will not happen again. Happy weekend, everyone!
Edit 03.06.2023: Now there is 80 GB of extra disk space for Sopuli, apparently 40 wasn’t enough. In addition to extra space I also bought peace of mind. Sopuli was again offline but no more!
No huh huh taas!
You’re welcome, happy to have helped. I run 11 fediverse instances, all at Hetzner. The largest being https://mastodon.world with 164k users. My Lemmy instance is the newest, created 2 days ago.
Thank you for all that you do to stand the instance up for us. Being brand new and at risk of asking something that’s a) in the FAQ or b) offensive, do you accept donations to help with running costs?
Hmm. Hosting this instance costs me currently ~9 € per month for me and I’m employed, so I don’t think there is a need for donations to help with running costs.
ok :)
Well thank you very much for doing this.
Well you’re just an awesome person. If you ever need help with visual content or other things I can help! (Photo editing, video, designs, 3D modelling and so on). I can also help with other IT things if needed I’m just not much of a coder though.
Oh, thank you for the offer! At least in the visual department Sopuli doesn’t need anything new, the logo made by William Rudi (https://www.artstation.com/williamrudi) was the thing with most visual effort.
And it’s awesome, big friendly face which I’m not gonna lie is one of the main reasons I chose the server haha. The other being that it was the only one that seemed like a general-topic, EU based server. Maybe that’s something to lean on to grow the European userbase?
I was there when it happened!browsing one moment and then Puff! It’s weird being at the birth of a site and watch all of this stuff unfold but I have high hopes for this place!
Out of curiosity, how much disk space does this instance use? It doesn’t seem like there’s an extreme amount of users/posts/comments based on what I can see from the “Communities” page.
From what you describe it seems this small instance uses a few gigabytes of disk space already?
Or does it maybe have to do with the federation of other instances? Do their posts/comments also have to be stored locally in sopuli’s instance’s database?
Posts and comments are all text, so they take barely any space at all. Posts from remote instances are also stored in the local database. However images are a much bigger factor, and Docker also takes a lot of space for some reason.
I did so that out of 80 GB half is allocated for Sopuli and the other half for Docker. Before extending disk space again and running
ansible-playbook -i inventory/hosts lemmy.yml --become
, Docker had eaten all of the 20 GB extra disk space like Nikocado Avocado. Now after running the command and getting 40GB of extra disk space each, Docker uses only 1.4 GB (4 %) of it. Sopuli uses now 10 GB (27 %).
Bit of a painful start but hopefully 80 gigs will tame the beast.

Sudden influx of new users or something else going on, because I’m getting occasionally “network request failed” errors?
I noticed the same thing too, this is getting weird.
