A lot of anti communist things happening back then were a surprise for the yanks despite their unending involvement in these regions. I think that if you try to overthrow these movements often and long enough, some unexpected shit will eventually turn up. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Gorbachev was an actual happy accident for them
