From what I see, it is not even functional yet, not even prototype.
But there is an issue open about making bridge to Matrix. So if they are talking about bridge, then I assume that they are using something else as their core protocol.
I agree, it would make much more sense to recycle Matrix for Discord clone/client rather than implementing something new from scratch.
But then again, I did not go look into the source code. Maybe they are using Matrix or fork of Matrix, maybe XMPP, I don’t know. Would be nice if their readme or wiki would go in more detail about this.
