Technology companies are increasing by the day and have monopoly over our data. We have to fight it because if not, they’ll eventually become too powerful.

I believe we have to strive for decentralization of everything. Decentralization of social media, decentralization of money. Decentralization of hosting. This is the only way to combat the trend.

There’s a zero sum game in the power struggle between the centralized agents and decentralized agents. If we win, they loose. If they win, we loose.

Yeah, I’m trying to get people in my town to use these services. Posting juggling videos on peertube, political microblogging and local activity on mastodon. Try to make my community excited and understand whats on the line and how they personally benefit from these platforms.

I’m just starting out though, so I haven’t had that much excitement for them yet.

Although I have gotten my family to use Signal much more frequently.

Signal doesn’t have other clients than its official, and stores a lot of data on servers. How is it any better than whatsapp or telegram? Switch to Matrix.

The signal organization is non-profit. It doesn’t have to collect any data about you. It is libre so you can investigate the code. It has been endorsed by Edward Snowden which makes it easier to recommend.

Whatsapp enforces the facebook walled garden. My understanding of whatsapp is that it collect keystroke data and metadata. It does end to end encryption though (although it is meaningless concidering all other data collected).

So it makes sense to recommend Signal. It does give you more autonomy and privacy.

I am using matrix, but I feel more confident in recommending Signal for now.
