Researchers are hoping that a new, low-cost battery which holds four times the energy capacity of lithium-ion batteries and is far cheaper to produce will significantly reduce the cost of transitioning to a decarbonised economy.
It’s true this stuff tends to get hyped up, but I do think there’s a lot more incentive to create batteries that last longer nowadays due to prevalence of electric vehicles and power hungry mobile devices. A lot of the time the roadblock isn’t with technology not working, but rather with companies not willing to spend the resources to make mass production practical.
I would like to feel optimistic, but I’ve seen news like these on a rather regular basis for at least a decade already…
