These people keep bringing up “mArKeT sHaRE”

  1. Linux is free. How would it get market share?
  2. It’s quite difficult to get an accurate “market share” since user-agents can be faked.

EDIT: I wonder if Microsoft are making anti-Linux accounts to try and hamper Linux.

Yes on the Azure Servers they use their own Linux distro CBL-Mariner.

Let me tell though, their “contributions” to the Kernel don’t mean much if you aren’t a Microsoft fanboy who uses their shit.

I used to hang out on the linuxmasterrace sub all the time. It was pretty neat. Discussions about tech and linux. People helping each other. People posting pictures of their achievements, the occasional meme, etc. Then really suddenly it blew up for some reason and more people started streaming in and of course the place went to shit. They started posting cringy “I use arch btw.” memes. Eventually this and people simping for various YouTubers/Influencers made me leave.

Years later I thought I’d check again, one of the first things I see with thousands of upvotes: A meme about “I use arch btw.”.

I secretly hope that somewhere here on lemmy we can have a community that was like linuxmasterrace 6-7 years ago.

I’ll take your word for it re: the contributions to the kernel from MS

But re:linuxmasterrace, just because it devolved to memes about arch linux doesn’t mean that MS is behind it. Arch is a popular distro, and that entire community (linuxmasterrace) isn’t there for discussion, it’s there for low effort posts and memes.

Where am I saying that MS is behind it? All I’m saying is that in my experience linuxmasterrace used to be better than it is right now.
