I think also with age it’s harder to keep up with technology and expanding from just reading mainstream media. I hate people say you get more rightwing with age, I plan on being red till I die.
I think it’s just a social pressure thing. It’s a social invention that being conservative is somehow more mature, and while age doesn’t necessarily deradicalize radlibs I do think that 6-figure salaries do; a lot of these hippies were middle-class white suburbanites who had access to social mobility with decent paying jobs, benefits, etc.
You see the same thing today with hipsters, a lot of hipsters I know IRL and online that make up a huge bulk of radical liberals and baby leftists are, once again, middle class suburbanites. They certainly are living in rougher times than boomers did and this is helping keep them in the left-ish spaces they occupy but they are susceptible to bribery and their true affiliations sway with the wind and the circumstances surrounding their personal life; that’s not to say that I think all the new-pride-flag BLM-flag toting liberals will suddenly be anti-gay “race realists” if they got a promotion at work, but it would certainly cull a lot of the intermittent proto class conscious memes about “eat the rich” this and “billionaire taxes” that.
For the type of person that jumps ship dramatically like that, it was never about politics, about a worldwide struggle for justice, about science or history. It was about aesthetics, feeling cool and edgy, it was about pissing off mom and dad and egging the neighbors and talking shit about so-and-so at school, it was about the sex and the drugs and the wylin’ out that these counter cultures afforded. “Okay, now it’s time to ‘grow up’ and put on a suite and tie and acknowledge the plain ‘facts’ that communism has never worked and capitalism lifted 20 trillion people out of poverty, I mean after all it’s what all of my other white suburban friends, family, peers and idols say, it really sucks to acknowledge they were right along but hey I was just a dumb kid, isn’t everyone at one point?”
