I have a first gen. And I really like it. The battery life is a bit short but other then that I’m satisfied. I probably won’t upgrade soon because my current is still working nicely.

Would you say it can replace paper for you? I’m a maths student and I literally cannot work without paper and pen, it’s not super expensive, but I do go through well over a thousand pages and dozens of pens each year. No digital writing I’ve ever tried has been anything other than unpleasant. It would be interesting to explore this option, and would save me from scanning work that I hand in digitally.

Its not quite as good as paper. At least for the moments for pure flow when you are writing things down. But its close enough most the time for me.

For me the ratio of paper I use for scribbling thoughts to writing actual neat work is 10:1. Although I haven’t had lectures for a while, and I imagine it would probably be really great for lecture notes, as I could view them on my phone or laptop and send them to my friends. But I really depend on that “pure flow”, as that’s what the problem solving process is all about. Can you get the sidebar on the left (with choice of pen and eraser) to go away so you just have a blank piece of paper?

Yes you can. You can also move the sidebar to the other side if you are left handed.
