Not exactly what you’re asking about (I assume you’re talking about people like play testers and maybe streamers/youtubers), but I was somewhat recently paid to make a Stardew Valley mod, so I had to spend time playing my mod to make sure it was working. I got into the arrangement simply because a friend knows a streamer who wanted a custom mod made, and I have decent programming skills.
