  • I think a good window into the stance on gender equality in the USSR is viewing their propaganda posters.

Women are depicted as workers, industrial/farmer/politicians/teachers/scientists/engineers and also great athletes. In juxtaposition with the West, where women during that time period we’re usually framed as sexual objects or robots to please their hardworking husbands.

It’s important to note that there was a huge emphasis on the glory of motherhood in the USSR (considering the circumstances of infant mortality pre revolution, and decimation of population after WWII, this makes sense)

Luxury consumption was not at the forefront of industrialization in the USSR, so, yes Soviet women may look less ‘feminen’ than their western counterpart. But that’s mostly superficial and holds no material interest.

As far as the maternity hospital treatment, that sounds a bit outlandish. But I’m sure in some rural areas it’s possible the medical facilities were not as advanced. Although the Soviet Union had an incredibly high amount of doctors per capita, at some points even exceeding the US.

So yes, I do believe women were more emancipated in the Soviet Union in the sense that man and woman shared the same responsibilities in bettering their country for the collective whole.
