Glad you love it. This is kind of a tired debate but specifically if you are well versed in Photoshop and try to convert to Gimp you feel like, well, a Gimp. From personal experience I tried for a solid year and it never felt right. I could still do the things I needed but it took longer and was more cumbersome. Probably a different story if you grow up with it.

Both xiaomi and Huawei have generated pretty legitimate sounding security concerns, and this is on top of the privacy you are already giving up running Android on these devices. I work in research and China has a terrible track record of stealing research data. For your average Joe I guess it probably wouldn’t be a huge deal, but these companies aren’t advertising to average American customers so just less likely to happen. Sample here on Lemmy is privacy leaning, so I would estimate most of the folks you are asking don’t think it’s worth what I would argue are legitimate additional security / privacy concerns.

Funny, I followed the same exact course. IPhone 2-5 then switched to Samsung after 5. I feel like they had a strong edge at that time and it was getting to be more and more of a PITA to jailbreak the iphones then. Pixel w graphene sounds intriguing but I can’t imagine it’s without headaches. If you are already sideloading things frequently though you might be the type to not mind some of the extra steps graphene will demand. I wouldn’t blame anyone for going with Apple right now - I don’t think the Android benefits are as strong as they used to be. At the same time, I don’t see any attractive reason to switch since for me it would mean more cost and dealing with the frustrations of an ecosystem switch without any clear reward in return.

I like where I stand in that model. I’ve tried the alternatives and have found genuine value in what I’m paying for. Lemmy loves turning its nose up at Kagi because “money” but they’ve gone out of their way to index the fediverse where most have ignored us. I’m an anonymous Kagi user I pay through a third party using a crypto account and I couldn’t be happier - they now have a lower tiered payment plan that is affordable for me.
