I just saw today that there is now a desktop app in beta for Windows and macos. As a privacy conscious person on Linux I am stuck as a second class citizen using proton services because there are no Linux apps besides bridge.
They recently explained that they lack linux developers. They are very much aware of the need to have good linux apps, but they can’t find developers
where do i apply lol
there isn’t exactly no linux developers. I get what they mean but I also feel like there is talent out there.
What they said: “We have no Linux developers.”
What Linux users heard: “They’re looking for Linux developers!”
What they probably meant: “We don’t want to pay for Linux developers.”
not to be a jerk but there are much smaller companies than them that have linux developers. Or they take some in house people and say hey learn how to develop for linux. It’s actually not that hard ( source: I am an Engineer for a software company for 12 years )
True!
But I find the underlying cause of nearly every “we don’t have the help” situation for a company is not their inability to find the talent they need, but rather a lack of will to afford that talent.
If they really did need Linux devs, and they are getting no bites, they aren’t offering enough. That’s assuming they’re even fishing in the first place, which I am wagering they aren’t. If they really were looking, they probably would have mentioned they were hiring.
Evidently, they believe the revenue they think they’d earn with a native Linux app is less than the salary of the dev or dev team needed to make it. And the opportunity cost of making their existing devs wear extra hats apparently isn’t worth it to them, either.
Talent that hasn’t applied yet or that they haven’t scouted out.
I’m just copying what they were saying on an AMA, see https://phtn.app/post/lemmy.world/9249279
Hmm, another electron app? I’ll stick to Firefox.
Firefox for everything & everyone…
I got proton unlimited… Damn I should have looked before buying.
