On the toilet, though, replacing one isn’t too bad. It’s a bit messy with replacing the old wax ring and the water in the inside of the J-curve of the toilet sloshing around. This is the sitting water in the bowl so maybe not drinkable clean. Replacing it with a modern low or dual-flush will pay off for the cost and labor. The basic ones go for $99.
On disposing: I saw one used in a backyard as a very handsome flower planter. There are salvage places that buy toilets (especially old/classic ones, no idea why), and a lot of municipal garbage services have a large item curbside pickup service.
Worse case, you can take it down to the local dump. Just make sure you’ve tipped ALL the water out of the J-curve before loading it in the trunk.
