As a series of repressive bills targets drag shows across the country, performers in Texas try out a novel defense.

Between this and the Supreme Court of Texas barring a woman from leaving the state to get a life-saving abortion for an unviable fetus, Texas seems to just hate anyone that looks like a woman.

Men have been dressing as women and performing since Greek theater, but gawd damn it’s going to stop in Texas.

Not really, no. Occasionally people do it, but it’s usually seen as a British thing when they do.

Outside Britain, the word “pantomime” is often understood to mean miming, rather than the theatrical form described here.

You could believe in personal responsibility for your own actions, fiscal responsibility/frugality with tax dollars, limited government intrusion on personal rights etc and generally be a good person.

It’s the Conservatives in Name Only that are the bad hypocrits.

Every one of those traits describe many progressives as well (myself included). I don’t think those descriptors are sufficient to describe conservatives. I think when someone says “conservative” these days, they mean “socially conservative”.

More specific descriptors of a modern “conservative” would include:

        Resistant to progress

        Distrustful of education

        Distrustful of medical science

        Distrustful of climate science

        Prone to bigotry

        Prone to xenophobia

        Prone to misogyny

        Prone to homophobia

        Prone to racism

Prone to support authoritarian government styles

Firstly, I agree generally. I am just pointing out that the principals espoused and prioritized by the “conservative” party in the US have been wholly abandoned.

Calling for tiny government but then advocating for more stricter laws and authoritarianism is broken.

The hilarious thing is that the few conservatives left that fit your description are considered the RINOs by the party at large

I’ve thought a lot about some of the recent laws passed here. On one hand I think I should leave and find a place safe to raise a family where extremists don’t lead the crazy law cycle. Similarly, I’ve not found a church since we left due to their harsh opinions on LBGTQ. One of my pastor’s comments to us was that by not providing an alternative opinion we can’t help other people see the world differently. That stuck with me.

I think being kind to others, even Abbott and his cronies (who I truly hate), and other of like minded colleagues, is the best medicine. There needs to be dissenting votes and different life experiences where love and kindness exists. I have very little social or economic friction in my life so it’s easy for me to take this stance. I get that. I just think if I can soften my heart others can too. I would even argue the Bible is a useful tool to help move alt rights more to the middle.

I try to teach my kids that name calling is bad and being kind and doing good is all that matters. I am hopeful that love and kindness will prevail.

This is all well and good, but there is a difference between being kind and being nice. I think people conflate the two far too often. If I had kids (which I do not) I’d want to make certain they understood the difference.

I appreciate the kindness. I had a very sweet conversation with one of my derby teammates about being trans. She said the bible, to her, said to love everyone and treat them with kindness. That’s all we ask for.
