@dropbear42 @lilstevie @ajsadauskas@lemmy.ml @wintermin @kentparkstreet @snowchook There’s a bigger national question out of tonight.
Over the past decade, the Libs have blindly followed Murdoch’s lead.
They’ve pushed culture wars, they’ve resisted climate action, and they’ve privatised public assets. They’ve tried Islamophobia, homophobia, outright racism (particularly against Africans and Aboriginal people), and transphobia.
And now they’re out of office across the mainland. Federal and state.
Maybe pretending this is America and playing to “the base” isn’t working so well.

@dropbear42 @ajsadauskas@aus.social @lilstevie @ajsadauskas@lemmy.ml @wintermin @kentparkstreet @snowchook but to act differently, they would need to be capable of independent thought
@dropbear42 @lilstevie @ajsadauskas@lemmy.ml @wintermin @kentparkstreet @snowchook “There are obviously problems for the Liberal Party. And while Liberal Party is better than other states in NSW, it is difficult to admit you have an ugly baby, and the Liberal Party needs to have that conversation” — Liberal Party Strategist Tony Barry.

Ugly baby is very generous when describing the liberal party. Ugly babies can grow and change. Dinosaur frozen in time would be more apt. In W.A., the Liberal Parliamentary Party hold their meetings in a telephone box. The liberal party is finished as we know it, a spent force, irrelevant.

Fortunately, Australia is nothing like the US and never will be. Australians can actually critically evaluate information coming to them and form their own opinion. Murdochs’s influence in Australia is dead. What a joy to witness…
@amazing_thoward @dropbear42 @lilstevie @ajsadauskas@lemmy.ml @wintermin @kentparkstreet @snowchook I mentioned it elsewhere, but it’s worth repeating.
Over the past decade or so, there’s been a shift in how the Murdoch media covers the news.
It’s always had a right-wing bias.
But there used to be a distinction between news (which at least pretended to try to be objective) and opinion (which had a more overt right wing bias).
Even on Fox News, they used to always have at least one nominally “left wing” talking head for “balance”. They used to pair Sean Hannity with Alan Colmes as a co-host for “balance”.
They’ve now completely obliterated that distinction. It’s all overt right wing propaganda.
And being so overt in the bias has ended up hurting its influence.

The Murdoch ability to influence Australian elections is over. The have become a caricature of themselves. Their so called journalists are just spin doctors, Murdoch apparatchiks with no regard for the truth. They have no credibility amongst the general public in either print or digital mediums.

A big cultural success for Murdoch/American-style populism in Australia has been the poisoning of popular opinion against unions.
The tradie-knuckledraggers used to be Labor heartland.
The time to turn that around is now, with wages and unemployment both at historic lows.
@dropbear42 @amazing_thoward @lilstevie @ajsadauskas@lemmy.ml @wintermin @kentparkstreet @snowchook Definitely agree that the influence is reduced, rather than gone.
At the same time, the warnings of doom about the Teals in The Australian, the Adelaide Advertiser spruiking Steven Marshall, the Herald Sun screaming about why we should have re-elected ScoMo, and the Daily Tele going in to bat for Perrottet, all added up to nothing.
Yes, the political class and the rest of the Canberra press gallery will still listen to Murdoch, and still overestimate News Corp’s influence.
But News Corp’s endorsement no longer wins elections, especially once the public has turned on a coalition government.
