Changing keyboard layouts also sounds annoying considering it’s not like i’m entering accents everyday
On windows it was like ctrl + alt + numpad 1 + . for accents or something, no compose key required
not sure what a compose key is, but I’ve gotten away with just using alt codes like these

On Windows operating systems, you can open up charmap then find what you want, select and copy to clipboard. Alternatively, in Windows 10 and 11, you can hold win key and tap the period key to open the emoji keyboard then scroll right to the "Latin Symbols"group to find letters with accents.
If you are on Windows then PowerTools has a tool called QuickAccents which makes selecting accents really easy. Press and hold a letter and a menu pops up that allows you to select the accent you require. No link to MS or the software, just a happy user who has a friend called Hélène!
