My favorite is by far Burning Man. A bunch of millionaires, billionaires, capitalists, tycoons, celebrities, and influencers all getting together to act like they’re poor hippies while they have every luxury known to man.
LEAVE NO TRACE while a mountain of trash is dumped year after year.
“Leave no trace” when the entire 1 week event has a carbon footprint of 100,000 tons, which is equivalent to 22,000 cars driving 10,000 miles each in a year, or roughly the CO2 output of many small cities in a year.
That’s not even including transportation, airfare, and the cost of the good they’re consuming.
I brought that up when the bazinga orgy was still going on this year, and some said that actually the mission statement is to leave no trace and that the foundation takes care of all the litter.
Gonna drive out to Black Rock City and take pictures of all the trash
BUT THE MISSION STATEMENT! THE FOUNDATION!
My overwhelming joy when they got rained in, and then my overwhelming disappointment when Our Father God did not wash them out and drown them in their own hubris. (Minus the workers forced to be there).
nepo babies + reality tv + social media ⇒ performative instagram pastoralism
Reality TV sucks
The ruling class also gets off to misery tourism in rather direct ways, such as visiting an impoverished area (under very heavy guard), soaking in the “I am so glad this isn’t me” arrogance they feel from being there, then leaving a short time later.
This channel’s great. Did anyone else here learn of it from Breht on Shoeless in South Dakota?
Breht from rev left radio? If he recommended it, it’s likely good, I will have to check it out.
Yes, Shoeless is a spin-off show where he talks shit and about mental health with his alcoholic childhood friend. He played the entirety of the Hemingway video on the podcast.
