Yesterday I was at Best Buy and saw the Blu-ray on a shelf. I decided to buy it on a whim, as I’d heard of it before and remember it getting good reviews. I’m no stranger to anime, I’ve seen Lucky Star, KonoSuba, and two of the three My Hero Academia movies. In particular, I enjoyed the MHA movies because of their World of Ham tendencies, and everything there is so over-the-top. So I thought if this film is anything like MHA, I’m gonna end up loving this.
I watched it blind, with little knowledge of the One Piece franchise. All I know is that they’re pirates and they ate some fruit that gave them powers (or something like that). Anyway, it had the same over-the-topness as MHA, so that I enjoyed. But I was really surprised at how emotional it was, especially with Uta’s motivations and backstory. No spoilers, but there were some themes involving death and the afterlife. I almost cried at the ending, too.
Overall, great animation, great music, and unique story. I might actually watch the series lol. I heard it was the highest-grossing film in Japan in 2022, and I think that title is well-deserved.
Shame on me for not seeing this in theaters when I had the chance!
TL;DR: As a newcomer to One Piece, I enjoyed this film because of its heart, animation style, music, and similarities to MHA.
My wife has been watching OP for over ten years now. I always talked shit about it but never understood it. After being amazed by this movie though, I finally decided to give the show a shot and am so far blown away by how timeless it feels. It definitely has a lot of the typical shonen tropes but it’s mainly a comedy with continuity and it really excels in the regard.
Yes, join the nakama. You’ll never escape.

If you are interested in trying to watch it though, One Pace is a group that fixes the pacing and probably pares it down to 1/3 to 1/2 the orig8nal run time
I’ve not watched the movie yet. But I’ve watched the anime series and also read the manga.
But some of my friends have watched it and they said it’s nothing compared to the anime. Regardless, I plan on watching it in the future.
I would highly recommend you to watch the series. It has great laughs, awesome stories for every character and one of the best world building in fiction writing. If you cried at the end of this movie, then this series will take you on a ride of emotions.
If you plan on watching, I recommend you start with the One Pace project.
ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT: Next week the One Piece Live action series starts airing. If you plan on watching this anime in the future, stay away from anything related to one piece on the internet. Else you will be spoiled.

I just watched Sanji and Zeff on the island and the desk scene at Arlong Park. Both of those moments really hooked me into the story reading the manga.
The story is seeming to do a great job mixing funny, serious, and sad moments in the right amounts to always keep you feeling something for the characters. It never stays one way for too long.
There’s a couple of scenes in the Arlong Park arc. Nami bawling her eyes out and finally asking Luffy for help, the desk scene, and then the other one I was referring to was Vivi holding up her arm saying goodbye as they realized she couldn’t come with them.
Yes, Vivi was great too. I like that after they win, there’s still a good bit left of each arc where they take time to wrap things up and push the story forward. The boss fights are fun for sure, but the world building and the character development goes beyond whatever I would have ever expected for a story about a guy with rubber powers. The story feels real, even though everything is totally nuts.
Noland’s story has probably been my favorite part so far. That everyone believed in their loved ones for so long despite all the bad things that happened, even with the big snake, I felt it was very powerful.
But more I keep remembering other moments like the guy that kept waiting for water in Alabasta and such. There’s just so much good stuff in there!
I haven’t watched it, but Ado’s songs are amazing and are a huge pull factor for me.
I’m fairly new to One Piece as well although I’ve watched anime for about 20 years. I generally avoid super long things because DBZ just made me feel anything that big had to have tons of filler, plus it’s just a heck of a commitment. One of the guys at my work has read it and watched it all more than once and he says it’s coming to an end in the near future, and he said as much of an anime fan as you are, you aren’t curious to know what the One Piece is?
I looked at it, and the art didn’t look great, and what bits I saw on Toonami just looked ridiculous and childish. I kept putting it off and putting it off. But I found a colored version of the manga and started reading from the beginning. It takes a good minute to get up to speed, but the characters are fun and you care about them, the world building is good. The battles have weight to them. It’s really been a ton of fun. I’m excited to finish out this epic journey now, and I totally get why this is a classic.

I’m in the Water 7 arc in the manga. They’re chasing NR on the train.
In the anime I’m where Buggy met up with Alvida. I feel that’s the first filler, but it was still fun. I think it was all the chapter title substory stuff.
I did see One Pace, but I’ve been taking my time with watching it so I don’t catch up to my reading. I’ll probably do that if I rewatch.

Lol exactly, another I never started for the same reason.
I didn’t watch this movie but saw the series (till the latest episodes) about 2 times now. First time was around 5-6 yesrs back after which i stopped watching it because it’s pace was too slow. Then during the covid season i picked it up again and had to download more than a hundred episodes so i started watching from the first episode again. 8 episodes a day and it takes around 4 - 5 months to get to the latest episode.
One funny thing i noticed is Luffy is so simple minded his attacks are the same with different names. No tricks. No extra tools. Everyone in his team has something new and he’s just the same.
