Astronauts bound for Mars should swing by Venus first, scientists say

so higher radiation doses for longer. Yeah, that could work.

I think the point is that the entire mission would be shorter therefore reducing absolute radiation levels. If a spaceship went direct it would have to remain in mars orbit for a year and a half.
