So glad i found out before signing up for their shit.
Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, Proton.
Or do. IDGAF.
Proton has in the past revealed user information to authorities. For instance, Proton previously handed over an IP address at the request of French authorities made via Europol to Swiss police. Yen wrote a Twitter post at the time, stating, “Proton must comply with Swiss law. As soon as a crime is committed, privacy protections can be suspended and we’re required by Swiss law to answer requests from Swiss authorities.”
Well, that’s not wrong, and I will not hold that against them. However, open support for fascists is a huge problem: it supports fascists, plus Proton may support them in other ways behind the scenes. It’s also breaks the trust that are indeed politically neutral - we can no longer be sure that they won’t voluntarily supply the fascist US “government” with data on their perceived opponents, or worse: actively help break encryption (eg by supplying keys that they keep a copy of).
I take Mr. Yen’s point in his tweet but does he not see Trump is all for big business? I highly doubt Trump will do anything about big tech as long as they kneel to him. If they defy him then he’ll maybe do something but considering he wants us to be strong against China he won’t in the end probably.
Mr. Yen did post that tweet 4th of December which (I believe) was before Zuckerberg and the rest of big tech publicly cozied up to Trump. I hope he has changed tack on this view of his (haven’t read his tweets since them so don’t know).
Ultimately I will still continue to use Proton since they have the best track record of any email provider but might reconsider. Unfortunately, there isn’t really another option (as far as I know) other than hosting the email server yourself (which is a ball ache)
I disagree that they did this, but I also recognize that they didn’t have much of any option.
They probably have more US clients than all other nations combined.
Both the democrats and Republicans have historically attempted to ban encryption for the consumer market.
Being in Switzerland, he is essentially the head of the only VPN company on planet earth that can protect your data truly from the US government.
Proton is required to fight modern fascism. The fascists have to think we are on their side.
That has got to be the worst take I’ve seen in Lemmy ever.
No, it really isn’t.
If it becomes illegal for Americans to cross a digital bridge into Switzerland, the fight is as good as over.
Trump is transactional. If a few tweets praising him prevents him from going after encryption, every group he is going after will be overall safer.
not only do we have the freedom angle to look at, we also have the geopolitical angle to look at here. This is the CEO of a private corporation owned by a non-profit foundation, itself a branch off of a scientific organization funded by a state whose entire existence so far is predicated upon selling secret freedoms to all who can pay, not just those who are the correct people.
The VPN and encryption software is likely to be illegal. The foundation who sells it may already be running afoul of newly signed executive orders. And the state who houses them is once again staring down the face of all it’s customers going to war against each other.
If all it costs to keep the bridge to Switzerland open for Americans is a few empty words, than pay the cost. It is that valuable.
