      Alexisonfire mentioned!

Have you heard their latest album? I haven’t heard it all, but there’s a song on it called Sans Soleil I really like

I like your taste, lot of overlap

Listening to a lot of Trophy Scars, Deafheaven, Liturgy, Vildhjarta and Foresthall lately

New used car has a working cd player but the aux cable needs to be replaced so I’ve been listening to a lot of BTBAM and Animals as Leaders in the car too

i’m a huge deafheaven fan, as well as liturgy. not familiar with vildhjarta, trophy scars, or foresthall though, do you have any albums of theirs you’d recommend?

Vildhjarta might be my favorite band. They’re very much a Meshuggah descendent and started out doing Meshuggah riffs+metal/deathcore stuff with screechy horror soundtrack ass bits and spooky ambience and have really carved out their own niche that everyone refers to as “thall”

Both of their full albums are concept albums about a spooky old European kinda folktale woodcut vibe story about sentient critters in a critter town in the dark woods called Måsstaden (Seagull Town roughly in Swedish) that gets taken over by a cult, and the protagonist Snake 🐍 has to rescue his friend Bird 🐦 from them

Their early demo and unreleased stuff all whips ass and is mostly instrumental, look up “Vildhjarta 2007 demos” for their super crispy early production to get a feel for them, I fucking love the early version of Traces and Deceit, super fat punchy 7 string tone and great drums

Måsstaden, Thousands of Evils EP, and Måsstaden Under Vatten are their main releases, the first two got remastered and sound better imo

MUV is one of my favorite albums of all time

They released 3 singles after that which are basically an EP that are just named with “++” around the song titles but all go together and are an evolution of their style from MUV

“+den spänka kanslan+” (the Spanish feeling)

          “+ylva+” (she-wolf)

          “+kristallfågel+” (glass bird)

They’re linked to the band Humanity’s Last Breath (more deathcore-y) through Buster Odelholm, who is Vildhjarta’s drummer and producer and HLB’s main writer, guitarist (he plays left handed with the strings upside down on a 30" baritone 7 string lol) and vocalist

Vildhjarta’s guitarist has a solo instrumental side project called Stoort Neer that whips ass too if you like Vildhjarta’s guitar writing style

(sorry for the special interest dumping lol)

          sicko-jammin

You got anything on deck like agalloch? I really like their vibe. Ragana and panopticon kinda check that box for me a bit as well. Bleak and wintry. I’ve listened to WITTR a bit as well, but somehow never got as into them as I thought I might.

I also love isis and wish they were still making music. In that same vein, the ocean, cult of Luna, and Rosetta mostly scratch the itch.

Maybe check out East Of The Wall (Resentiment specifically) as an Isis/Ocean fan

For Agalloch fan recs, big recommend for Falls of Rauros “The Light That Dwells In Rotten Wood”

              Very good atmospheric black metal

Ooh this falls of rauros album is exactly what I was looking for! Will definitely be listening to more of them as well. Thanks again for the recs, you really nailed it!

                kirby-jammin

Also I see they’ve done a split with panopticon, which is a good sign that they’re probably not fuckin nazis. Not that you’d recommend them if they were, but like, I always worry with black metal lol.

Understandable lol, reasonable concern lol but I think they’re lefties (anarchists I think, idk but they’re cool)

Fwiw, I used to really like Young & In The Way and don’t ever give them money, their bassist was a real piece of shit and did some horrific SA shit allegedly and the other guys handled it really poorly

(cool crusty black metal/atmospheric vibes though and a sick logo, really unfortunate they suck, “I Am Not What I Am” was one of my favorite albums of the 2010s)

Checking out ressentiment right now, feels like isis-y meshuggah or something off the bat. Definitely ocean-like. Also maybe some protest the hero vibes? Very much enjoying this so far, thank you!

Edit: yeah, I dug that album all the way through, will definitely have to check out more of their stuff!

Ooh whale albums spotted! And panopticon and gizz. Ooh and alcest, I always forget how much I like them. I have you tagged as “Likes good music” and you continue to convince me that was a correct tag. I need to start digging into the albums on your posts that I don’t recognize.

I love panopticon (band), as well as panopticon (isis album). Too panopticon (concept) isn’t similarly rad.

Microtonal banana is a sick album. Everything they put out that year was amazing. Polygondwanaland is my all time favorite of theirs.

I have been continuing on my ahab streak, and been pushing into sunn O))) because I’m just really feeling the “music that makes me feel like lava” vibe right now.

Oh yeah, and cult of Luna. Less of a lava vibe but still scratches an itch in my brain. Very good atmosphere.

Hell yeah, the ocean is rad. I think pelagial is my favorite of theirs. I haven’t listened to pelican in a while, but now that you mention them I do remember them having a lava sorta vibe. Good call!
