A month ago, I was very close to starting a company subscription, mostly for emails. Ended up going with Hetzner where I’ve got my server anyway and their email service is 100 accounts for the price of (their web hosting service), whereas gsuite and proton wanted about the same amount for every user.
It’s not a significant amount for single digit users, but I’m just glad it’s not going to someone publicly supporting Trump.
Same with web.de/GMX in Germany.
I never quite understood why people are willing to pay so much money for email subscriptions when they can get whole webhosting packages for half the price. For some its probably lazyness and for others its the lack of knowledge that webhosting includes emailsy
For me it was the lack of knowledge tbh. I did already have a Hetzner VPS, but that doesn’t come with emails - I had to also add in the web hosting, which I’m currently not using (yet).
In theory, you could install Plesk, cpanel or anything similiar to easily manage emails on a VPS, but this comes with all the administrative tasks of keeping your server up to date.
Now I’m wondering if I should switch or wait to see if he’s ousted.
On the one hand, and least it’s a Swiss non-profit organization now that’s open sourced on the code.
On the other hand, the CEO support JD Fucking Vance and now none of the data feels secure despite what they say about their tech.
The most charitable interpretation is that he’s pulling an “enemy of my enemy is my friend” move, but considering Proton AG is located in Switzerland, and not the USA, that would be a profoundly stupid move since Big Tech doesn’t have the same influence in the EU as it does in the USA.
The crypto shit was already making me wary in the first place too, though knowing Proton’s previous financial difficulties I kinda understood why they might make a paranoid decision to have a crypto back up.
At this rate, I’m really gonna have to host my own server, aren’t I?
I think instead I’ll wait and see if they sack him as CEO. I’ll give them 3 months to respond and decide while I start backing everything up for migration.
feeling this one w/ the protonmail news today :(

I was very close to installing MailCow, but I realized it might not be the best idea tbh
