Just recently peeked at my old Reddit account after talking with my partner about some communities they like there and how that keeps them away from Lemmy/hexbear. I looked at posts in generally left leaning subs so I expected better but I suppose I’m spoiled by you wonderful people. But they number of carnists who crawl out on any discussion of veganism and MUST tirade about how all vegans are mentally ill, nutrient deficient, don’t understand agriculture, are secretly backed by 7th day adventists (had never heard this one before), lie about their diet, etc etc was just dizzying. And so many people validating that perspective and supporting it. Even saw people claiming eating ground beef diets cured their depression, on some Jordan Peterson shit lmao. Don’t really have a point to this rant just wanna say I love this community and how welcoming it is towards veganism, it’s a breath of fresh air every day here

A few weeks ago when there were a bunch of Bluesky users joining, several of them were whining about the CW rule for animal products and decided not to make an account solely based on that. This really is the only place that isn’t hostile to veganism by default.

Those were made for real? I thought they were a meme or something Making fun of veganism.

I’m so used to communities being anti-vegan when I finally found one that was supportive. I didn’t even consider it.

Even though I thought they were making fun of vegans or something, I still found the content warnings very helpful. Thank you everyone for using them.

im-vegan. This community has become my norm, such that I’m not able to tolerate pics of dead animals or hanging around normies grilling a dead fish.

On the other end of it, I was never the kind of person to put pronouns in my name in 2019. And there was a bit of transphobia I had to (probably still need to) work on. And now some of the best comrades are queer and trans people.

Again going back to 2019, if someone made a comment shitting on men or white people, I’d probably get a bit defensive. Now I’m unironically the most self hating white dude I know IRL. I’ve read a heap of theory since then, and I’m much better on anti-settler and anti-patriarchy thinking.

I actually don’t want to make my veganism the centre of everything. Other battles are important. I personally don’t have the energy to attack carnist users here all the time. And for selfish reasons, veganism as a sole issue just gets boring; communism and the issues that surround it are more intellectually interesting.

I’m kinda rambling. Just want to say that I appreciate this place.

It wasn’t always, the pro-veganism bent was won with countless struggle sessions. I was here 3 or 4 years ago on a different account when there was a huge push against vegans. Many good comrades swore off the site back then due to that shitty reaction.

The seventh day Adventist bit is funny as fuck, they’re not even vegan. They are vegetarian tho, and have a wholly-owned (and therefore fully tax-exempt!) vegetarian food brand in Australia and New Zealand. That’s fairly well-known in .au, so I guess someone heard part of a story and ran with it.
