    How useful is a warm-water port in the Mediterranean really though, with the Gibraltar choke point blocking access to the rest of the world?

    Honest question, I don’t know the answer

        Ah yeah, that’s true.

        Not quite the same as having access to the oceans, but enough to be strategically useful.

          Also, the only orher warm water port they have is in Kaliningrad, which is separated off mainland Russia by the Suwalki gap (and Belarus but they are already almost russia so,…) so a massive blow to lose the port in Syria IMO.

            Yeah, and Kaliningrad is also choked off the oceans by the Danes.
