The title is quite confusing. It sounds like the last time all top 10 spots were occupied by sequels was 50 years ago. What they actually meant is that over the last 50 years numbers of sequels in top 10 was gradually increasing (starting from 0 in 1973/1974).

How, though? While technically not the same as a sequel, it’s still expanding on an established property, which seems to be what’s popular. It’s still not something wholly original.
There are almost no big original movies being made, that goes much further than just sequels. It’s all adaptations of books and plays, reboots, remakes.
Deadpool and Wolverine serves as a sequel to the Deadpool movies, the X-Men movies AND the Loki TV show.
and the Blade movies, which I personally wouldn’t classify under X-Men.

It was awful. My wife bowed out after 10 minutes. I made it about half way through before I yielded and admitted it was a terrible movie, and shut it off. I do not understand its success and popularity.
