187 countries voted in favor of ending the blockade, 2 voted against (United States and Israel)

I’d ditch both for cuba. Cuba never tried multiple times to stage a coup in my country.
I’d ditch both for any other country
oh yeah, would you ditch them for North Korea?
That’s a rather low bar
They seriously just need to throw NATOstan out of the UN.
“Rules Based International Order”
no even the majority of them voted for it, its just the genocide duo this time
More like “America rules, UN drools”
I find it funny all of America’s allies/vassals always vote in favour of this. Is it just a vote that the US doesn’t care about anyway, because they can vetoe it, so they vote in favour of it regardless to “look good”?

No. A/ is the general assembly, there is no veto power in there. Though there isn’t any power to uphold this or make material changes either
Ohh right I see, so it’s just a cynical vote by their allies, knowing that whatever they vote for can’t be enforced anyway.
Possibly dumb question: couldn’t all of the countries that voted in favor just reinstate trade with Cuba anyway? If the US tries to swing its dick around, refer those saps to the infallibility of the international rules-based order, the UN charter, and threaten to cut off trade with the evil empire should it continue endangering the free movement of goods. It would be funny, likely effective, and well deserved, especially at a time where US soft power is already waning. Feel like we have a lot more to lose than most of these other nations if we tried enforcing our delirious terms on them.
ETA: Of course, I mean the larger, industrial nations with large trade networks; I can certainly understand how/why a smaller country who relies a lot on US imports/exports don’t want to set off the bloodthirsty burger empire.
there’s a book published in 1999 titled “Cuba: Confronting the US Embargo” which i was advised to read in advance of a trip i took to Cuba, to get a grasp on how the trade embargo works. i read about half of it, but the reason that wouldn’t work is that the embargo doesn’t target countries who trade with cuba, it targets private corporations who trade with cuba.
so, if you own a company not based in the US that does not do any business with the US, go for it. sort of. the restrictions also prevent any ship that docks with a cuban port from docking with any US or US allied port in the hemisphere for 6 months, or it is subject to millions of dollars in fines and search/seizure of any “stolen” goods that the US state department defines as all things cuban. because, to the US, anything that comes from cuba was made with property stolen from US business interests during the revolution.
so basically, to elide the embargo, your business can only do business with cuba and the handful of other countries in the hemisphere that give the US the finger. additionally, you can only use a shipping company that is willing to skip all those other ports when setting up a route.
there’s more to it than that, but suffice to say the fines and penalties are company killing, so only typically state owned enterprises that specifically want to help cuba trade with cuba.
it’s disgusting as hell, and americans never ever learn how any of it works on purpose. cubans are affected by intimately and they wonder why americans allow it to happen to them. they are often confused to learn we know less about it than they do.
we know less about it than they do
Well that’s all depressing to learn, and (unfortunately) it makes sense
Thank you for the explanation comrade!
lol, ukraine just didn’t show up or what
Venezeuala too.
venezuela doesn’t have a master to answer to
Yeah but why didn’t they show up? Other states without masters voted for Cuba.
I think they’re barred from voting in the UN because of debt or something.
that’s morbid
Damn you Republic of Mol pick a lane!

DEMOCRACY!
There’s a surprise.
Death to America, Death to Israel, Victory to Cuba
Bro, not cool Moldova.
Also surprised Ukraine didn’t ABSTAIN(maybe?). They must be feeling pretty betrayed by the US at this point.
Ukraine, Venezuela, and Afghanistan are all blank which doesn’t really make sense, as I would assume that anything other than a vote in favour or against counts as an abstention?
I know Ukraine abstained from the last one.
Blank means they had no representatives for the vote. Venezuela because they can’t access the US-based UN facilities. Probably the same for Afghanistan. Idk about Ukraine.
Oh right, fixed it.
This is why socialism doesn’t work. The US will just embargo you regardless of UN consensus.
