I left because my family was abusive to me.

I ended up in an abusive marriage. (After several abusive relationships.) It was so bad that I thought that abuse was just normal and that my family wasn’t so bad. So I came back.

After leaving my abusive spouse, I left the family again. (Until the patriarch of the family died.)

Life is much better with all that behind me.

Glad to hear you’re in a better place. It does indeed take a while to know what is normal and what isn’t

A whole lotta chaos over the next four or five years ending in a messy divorce. Nothing about it was healthy. And yet, somehow I think I was actually on a worse trajectory before this.

There wasn’t any one thing. We were no contact for awhile but we slowly started talking a little at a time. It eventually led to me moving back in for a few small stints (student teaching, knee surgery, a few months before my wedding). Today, we talk basically only through FaceTime with my two year old and there’s a trip or two to see each other over the course of the year. But honestly, my mental health is fucked before and after the visits, I get anxiety attacks before a phone call occasionally, and we can’t really have deeper than small-talk conversation because we disagree on almost everything.
