Rojava is a weird one for me. I see people say that they’re backed by NATO, and obviously NATO wouldn’t help them if they weren’t destabilizing the region, but also I can see the argument that it’s pragmatic for them to deal with the US and NATO, they need the trade a lot more than China needs the trade with Saudi Arabia or Israel but everyone excuses that as pragmatism. If it was a choice between Syria under Assad or Rojava then I’d be on the side of Assad but I can’t help but feel a little sympathetic for them. Are they little underdogs or west-backed useful idiots? I don’t know. I await anyone else’s strong opinions on the matter so I can learn more.
