Foss stands for free open source software but the free refers to libre, not gratis, not the price.
Since obsidian is not even open source (vs closed source) I don’t think it can be free (libre). And even if it would be open source, it doesn’t mean that it is libre. It could also have a weird or no license. Gpl v3 is a good example of a libre license.
Any idea why Obsidian is more popular than Joplin? I’ve been using Joplin for a few years but am tempted to try out Obsidian
As an open source alternative to Obsidian, I’m loving Zettlr. The only drawback for me it’s that it’s Electron based, but welp, still worth it
This looks great; I’m going to look into perhaps switching over later - just added it to the list!
all I want for christmasssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
is obsidian to be open sourced!
It would be so incredible to have this happen!
Obsidian is also on android 🤙
Just updated - thanks.
Any reason why you did not add texstudio to your list but ten others?
Added it now - I had to look into it first as I didn’t recognise it, that’s all.
Is obsidian really free software? I don’t think it is
Yeah, it’s completely free and can even be user without internet.
If you want to host your content on their servers though (for a website or sync), that costs money.

Ahhhh, I see; thankyou very much for this, I’ll change it!
