This kind of repeating music in places of business should be illegal. It’s absolute torture for employees and nobody seems to give a shit about it. There are still songs from my time working at Ruby Tuesday that are burned into my brain and send me into a rage to this day.

I work in a relatively retail environment that I am in control of. Daily some shitty customer makes the stupid observation “It sure is quiet in here.” To which I always have to respond “If they made me play music I’d kill myself” or some such non-sense to drive home just how much retail radio makes me want to end all of existence after 10 years, and they still don’t realize that retail radio tempo is chosen specifically to affect purchasing habits of customers.

I have ADHD and the sensory overload of dealing with shitty customers and shitty music makes me want to burn entire cities to the ground.

I worked at a cannabis dispensary and it was probably the best job I’ll have ever worked for a number of reasons, but one of them was that the cashier got full control over the music. Whoever worked the till got to choose exactly what music was playing, exactly how loud, or if they even wanted music at all. It was such an incredible blessing.

Crazy thing is that in my experience it wasn’t even a dry ass playlist. They played one radio station that literally played the same 10 fucking songs day in and out

Welcome to the hellscape of iHeartRadio owning 90% of stations, assuming it was a standard station and not a carefully constructed by psychopaths to maximize spending and minimize offence thing.

Yep. No more of the public deciding if an artist should be a one hit wonder, they’ll shove it down your fucking throat until they’re not and “mainstream.” It’s borderline brain washing for those who want to listen to FM radio. Fucking Audacy, Clear Media and iHeart

They decide who’s artist career lives and dies.

I’m glad my wife got to pick the music when she worked retail. It was a healthy mix of anime intros, outros, and video game bgm and boy did it draw questions. (She only got away with it because it was a Japanese novelty store lol).

This is why I loathe Xmas music. There are only five songs, each roughly 120 seconds long. In any given shift, you’d hear each song 40-48 times (some songs have more covers). On top of that, the songs have above average repeated choruses. I threaten violence towards anyone who suggests Xmas music before December 1st.

If I was dictator for a day, Xmas music would be banned outside of a 36 hour window. Starting not one second earlier than 12pm on December 24th, and ending not one second later than midnight December 25th/26th. Violation of this mandate will result in solidarity confinement with a loop of Xmas music until the offending person has been cured of their mental illness that allowed them to tolerate the music.
