Hi all,

Sorry for the delay in updating everyone on the future of Relay. It’s taken until now for me to work things out.

For the time being, Relay is going to be free for everyone to use (this means no fees and no ads) while i continue optimising API calls and finalising subscription prices. I’m working hard to get call volumes down and i’ll try my best to hit as low a price point as possible, at least for a base tier that covers 85-90% of users. At the higher end of usage it’s looking like i’ll need to implement a few different price points but this is still something i need to figure out. I’ll let you know when i do.

Thanks again for all the incredible messages over the last week. I’ve seen them all and they really mean a lot - knowing how long some people have been using Relay for is amazing. For anyone moving on from here, thanks for supporting Relay over the last 12 years - i’m forever grateful.

Cheers, Dave

The idea of giving Reddit any money after how they’ve acted seems to me a repugnant idea.

Very true! Why give that money to a corporation who have shown that they do not care about us when Lemmy instances who have proven that users are important to them could use it.

Thanks u/Spez for taking the paid app I have been using everyday for 8 years, to add content to your website for free!

Dave is doing what he can, but a subscription to still not have access to NSFW is not something I am comfortable with.

Especially since a bulk of the subscription will go toward reddit instead of the dev creating the experience that’s actually usable.

I’m personally disappointed to see Dave concede here. It’s weird seeing folks in his thread offering donations despite the fact that he’s negotiated a grace period with Reddit.

I’m not angry with him for trying to keep something from his app of a decade, but I personally won’t be supporting it and will only buy a Relay for Lemmy.

I’m certainly not angry. He’s well within his right to make the decision he feels is best for him.

Yeah, really hoping that he would go to lemmy. But it is easy to comment from the comfort of my couch.

He’s also taking a big risk by starting off free.

Note that I following my ethics around these big internet data harvesting platforms.

Note I am using thunder for lemmy, which feels a lot like sync at the moment.

Exciting. Relay is fantastic, and if Dave can make some money in the process that’s great. I hate giving Reddit money as much as the next guy, but Dave has more than earned getting more than the $3 one time fee.
