ngl I’ve honestly gotten very frustrated at some of my friends for being very unreceptive to even trying a fediverse site, saying they would rather just stop using social media, and then signing up for Bluesky the moment they got the opportunity.
“No no no, the different instances and stuff aren’t competing. You see they all grow together”
“No, see, it’s actually a good thing that everything isn’t in one place…”
“It’s like email…”
I stopped halfway, explaining to my mom. She got the jist and thought it was cool, cause she has come to loathe centralized power in her own little way. “OH so it’s like the internet used to be” I was kinda surprised how quickly she picked up on my excitement.
wish i could get my family to understand FOSS software and decentralisation and all that, and why it’s important. sadly, they can’t even figure out that “you can’t use a work or school account on this version of microsoft teams” means they have to go and download the work/school version of microsoft teams, so getting them to understand all that would be difficult
Yeah, but the thing is, it’s decentralized. Did I mention that?
But they all use the same protocol!
My roommate’s eyes rolled very hard when I casually dropped the term “fediverse” for the first time
I have no friends.
I just send them permalinks. I’m doing my part 🫡
People I talk to have some excitement about my excitement, but also don‘t get it and are unlikely to change their habits, since they get whatever they seek on the centralised platforms.
I‘m cool though, it‘s like how Reddit used to be way back then, populated mostly some tech enthusiasts and it was nice like that.
draft comment not aimed at OP but rather just a sort of random shower thought -
instead of using the word “fediverse” would “activitypub” be a more prime time / palatable / sellable / legit / grown up sounding word to use?
I think decentralized internet is probably the most legitimate sounding
