    Eh? Isn’t this sexist?

    Why are men not given maintenance?

    Marriage is a traditional practise where there maybe gender-inequality but live-in relationships are modern n gender-neutral, right?

    The article says that a child was born. If that was the crux, then yeah, he has to give maintenance, for the child.
    If it’s not that, then this seems to be conservatism trying to grab onto new things.

      In this case, it is understandable that a child was born, and therefore the woman is entitled to a maintenance. But to force the institution of marriage onto people who do not believe in it seems to be the most regressive move. Gonna see how andhbhakts respond to this - are they gonna blame Nehru again?

        It is kind of strange. In my country (NZ) we “force marriage” insofar as we have all the same laws for marriage and non-married people who have been together for 3 years, but maintenance isn’t normal, only child support, property division etc.
