Reddit forces subreddits open, so some subreddits continue protest in different ways.
/r/pics only allows “sexy pictures of John Oliver” and many others follow suit. I know that at least /r/interestingasfuck started allowing porn, because Reddit cannot monetize nsfw content, but I don’t know if any more subreddits did that.

Yep, a lot of users are like “It’s over, they forced you to open up, what wimpy mods that compromise their morals to stay in power.”

Without realizing that it’s not over… it’s a change of tactics. Reddit has made it very clear that they will reopen the subreddits, like it or not. If you don’t comply, they are openly threatening to replace mod teams with folks who will. People are champing at the bit to take over massive subreddits with millions of users, just so they can grow their e-peen.

So from a mod’s perspective, you have 2 options:

        1. Hold firm and force Reddit to replace you. Reddit has been replacing mod teams within 24 hours of their first warning. The new mod team will reopen and resume normal operations.

        2. Obey what the admins are telling you to do, but on your terms. You still retain control of the subreddit, so you can find new ways to protest. Reddit has said that just setting a sub to NSFW without actually allowing NSFW is grounds for removal, but if NSFW is allowed, well, they didn’t say anything about that. Alternatively, changing a sub to something that quickly gets stale (John Oliverposting) quickly drives people off the site.

Option 2 is really the only way to keep the protest going. Follow Reddit’s instructions to the letter, but comply as maliciously as possible and force Reddit to go back on their well-documented words to do anything about it.

Afaik, r/pics is only allowing picture of John Oliver and r/interestingasfuck is abusing NSFW tag.

The bigger subs that are forced to open are now posting John Oliver pics or flooding themselves with porn

I’m not on Reddit, but I heard that some NSFW subreddits became Christian subreddits, and some SFW subreddits are filled with porn and other stuff (for example, r/interestingasfuck (Interesting As Fuck) became r/interestingasfuck (Interest In Gas Fuck)).

On the other hand, this post made me curious enough to break my Reddit hiatus just to go check out r/pics, and thus contribute to Reddit’s ad revenue, and so, win for u/Spez? Dammit…
