Apple just got slapped with a major antitrust suit alleging a 'pattern of anti-competitive behavior' across all its product lines. And it lost $114 billion in market cap in one day as a result.
It matters because if the DoJ wins, Apple Customers will be exposed to every single Identity Thief, Data Broker and Scam Artist on the global internet.
The reason why so many people are happy to be in Apples “Walled Garden” is because it provides them with just enough security to function on the internet without becoming a victim.
The only people who do want to break into the ecosystem are the opportunistic arseholes who want to exploit Apples customer base, whether to track their location and sexual health data for profit or oppression, backdoor their financials or even just sell their kids the equivalent of digital crack cocaine in the form of loot boxes in games.
It did start with the Smurfberries, but now, since these new laws have been introduced, tearing down the walls of the walled garden, it is as if people at Apple have said “why bother” and are just giving up.
It is still the most securely managed platform for normie users personal data. The only rival on user security is a Linux-Phone (like a PinePhone) running a privately curated version of Android or Linux, maintained by a full-time team of specialist security professionals.
I am keeping my mother on the platform, but I am also reminding her to be aware of scams and if there is anything suspicious, to take a photo with her iPad or iMac and iMessage it to me. If her AppleID is compromised, it won’t help her, but it should be enough to minimise her AppleID from being compromised.
